From 1987 to 1989, 3312 pregnant women were screened for Chlamydia trachomatis in Gabon. Altogether 1007 women complained of lower abdominal pain and vaginal discharge or vulvovaginitis and of these 161 (16%) were chlamydia positive; 2305 women were asymptomatic and of these 508 (22%) were C. trachomatis positive. In the positive group there was an increased incidence of small birthweight, prematurity and lower respiratory infection (54 cases) and C. trachomatis conjunctivitis (22 cases). It is concluded that prevention of C. trachomatis infection is important to prevent neonatal illness and tubal infertility in young women.G.W. Csonka.
