Following an introduction to the concept of food security, the food security situation in India is reviewed. National food policy is outlined. Progress made as a result of the World Food Summit of 1996 is discussed. The public distribution system in India is explained focusing on the issue of food grains under the system and the targeted public distribution system. The issue of increasing access to food among the Indian poor is discussed.
