Electrocardiographic signs of first degree sinoatrial block

A quantitative evaluation was made of sinoatrial conduction disturbances in patients with sinus arrhythmia, prolonged postextrasystole interval in atrial extrasystole, and the presence of P-wave abnormalities. Conditions suggesting the presence of first-degree sinoatrial block include sinus arrhythmia not associated with respiration and characterized by irregular changes of P-P interval length, as well as prolongation of the postextrasystole interval in atrial extrasystole by more than 260 ms in comparison with sinus cycle length. It was found that recording changes in the shape of the P-wave caused by sinus conditions does not serve as a basis for diagnosing sinoatrial conduction disturbances.
