Evaluation of training program for volunteer family planning communicators

Recently a training program was set up for volunteer family planning communicators in Thailand. Previous programs proved successful in promoting male sterilization and IUD use. Provinces were selected by high birth rates, similar socio-economic factors, and officers with good organizational understanding and attitude. The provinces selected were Chaiyahum, Nakhon Panom, Buri Ram, Mukdaharn, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et, Loei, Sakon Nakhon, Surin, Nong Khai, Si Sa Ket, and Ubon Ratchathani. the subjects for the training included, family planning and sterilization, rumor correction, communication techniques, and counseling. Tests were given to evaluate the training. Of the total trainees 83% felt the training was interesting and 71% found it useful. Interviews indicated that some lacked confidence because of inadequate knowledge, little faith in the public, and the inability to write reports. The testing showed little improvement in 2 areas, sterilization and family planning. Results indicate that practical experience should be emphasized and good attitudes should be a part of each training session. This program promoted cooperation between the private sector and the government. The training achieved its goals for the most part.
