A study was made of the feet of rats of the 22nd-28th generations of 35 recombinant inbred (RI) strains derived from reciprocal crosses between SHR/Ola and BN.lx/Cub rats; the latter show polydactyly and tibial reduction in all feet. 21 of the RI strains had a polydactyly-luxate syndrome. The hind feet were affected in all 21 RI strains, but the front feet were affected in only 13 of the strains. Front feet morphotypes were genetically fixed in generations 2-6 in all but 1 strain. It is suggested that there is a single gene with strong effects on the morphotype of the front feet. This gene, designated lxm (lx modifier), was linked to RT8 and Ms15-16.
