Based on the results of a 1985 survey involving a representative sample of 1865 adults in Switzerland, the paper tries to evaluate the economic importance of tourism compared with other economic activities. The survey confirms the hypothesis that the Swiss population clearly underestimates tourism's importance in the economy.
