The clinical significance of hyperprolactinemia in rheumatic diseases was studied. Serum prolactin levels were studied in 29 men with systemic lupus erythematosus, and in 14 men with classic rheumatoid arthritis, 13 lupus erythematosus patients and all rheumatoid arthritis patients did not take corticosteroid preparations prior to examination. In the group with lupus erythematosus (especially those not treated with corticosteroids), a definite increase in serum prolactin levels was observed. No changes in prolactin levels were observed in the group with rheumatoid arthritis. The possible use of drugs suppressing prolactin synthesis in lupus erythematosus patients (i.e. bromocriptine) is proposed.
