The Village Video Network Secretariat, organized by Martha Stuart Communications, a video production and training company in New York, promotes and encourages the use of video as a tool for development and exchange of tapes among its members. The network includes women's organizations in India, literacy teachers in Mali, scientists and farmers in China, family planning workers in the Caribbean, and others. The tapes are projected in different villages and communities in such a way as to encourage exchange and promote local development. The use of a video receiver gives the team of educators on the spot the chance to launch methods which involve participation and conscientization, while respecting the local culture and context. Thanks to the video, the diffusion of information is cooperative and this makes it possible for the local inhabitants themselves to find their own solutions, rather than seeing them imposed from the outside.
