The author reviews investigations in Africa since about 1960 on the transmission of disease organisms, especially Theileria spp. in cattle by ticks, and repeats a suggestion he put forward tentatively in 1976 that there are 4 valid species in cattle, T. parva, T. annulata, T. mutans and T. sergenti, transmitted by Rhipicephalus, Hyalomma, Amblyomma and Haemaphysalis, respectively.
