Sporotrichosis was confirmed in 5 adult, male crossbred cats with apparent fight wounds mostly on the forelimbs, cheek and nose. The wounds had failed to respond to treatment. Raised and ulcerated nodules developed on the cats particularly above the eyes, on the nose, behind both ears and between the shoulder blades. PM and histological lesions are described. Four veterinary students who had handled the cats and the owner of one cat developed suppurative skin ulcers, enlarged superficial lymph nodes and fever about one to three weeks after they had been bitten or scratched. Sporothrix schenckii was observed in biopsy samples taken from a lymph node and the skin of 2 of the students. Methods of treatment are discussed but in many feline cases destruction is recommended.
