Ninety children aged 7 to 18 months were chosen at random from the 417 registered births in 1968 in the town of Bay, Laguna. Children of bodyweight 76 to 85, 61 to 75 or below 60% of that considered normal for their age were classed as having malnutrition of grade 1, 2 or 3. Grade 3 included oedema. Normal children and those with grade 1, 2 or 3 malnutrition numbered 29, 30, 34 and 7.
