In 1990, tuberculosis remains a major, world-wide problem, with 50 p. cent of the world's population being infected by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In France, the latest known figures show a continuous decrease in the incidence of tuberculosis, despite the risk due to the development of AIDS, but the situation is totally different in developing countries where tuberculosis ranks first among the infections associated with AIDS. This TB-AIDS association makes it necessary to maintain in epidemiological tuberculosis watching system.
