Prevalence rates of HIV seropositivity (confirmed results) in a rural hospital in southern Zambia in late 1987 were 33% (6 of 18) in new leprosy patients and 50% (27 of 54) in patients with suspected tuberculosis, including 44% (8 of 18) in confirmed tuberculosis cases. These rates were significantly higher than in blood donors (11%, 7 of 63) or surgical patients (5%, 2 of 42) at the same hospital. The association of leprosy and HIV infection remained significant when analysis was restricted to rural residents.Richard Hayes.
