A preliminary survey of the food habits of the Sri Lanka leopard (Panthera pardus fusca) in three montane wet zone forests of Sri Lanka

The feeding behaviour of the Sri Lankan leopard, P. pardus fusca, in 3 montane forests was studied by identifying prey remains in the faeces. 50 leopard scats were collected during April-September 1995 from Horton Plains National Park, Hakgala Strict Nature Reserve and the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary. Hairs from 9 genera of mammals were identified, Cervus, Tragulus, Muntiacus, Lepus, Presbytis, Hystrix, Ratufa, Rattus and Canis. The sambar deer, Cervus unicolor, and the purple-faced leaf monkey, Trachypthecus vetullus, were common prey animals.
