Following an introduction by the moderator S. E. Stumpf, a resource paper entitled 'Population dynamics and food security' is presented by Myers. The paper covers the challenge of food security, the recent record in achieving food security, the influence of wealth, economic patterns and trends in agricultural and food production, decline of the environmental resource base (soil erosion, desertification, salinization and water logging, water deficits and droughts, tropical deforestation, biodiversity decline, landlessness, agricultural stress, ozone layer and depletion, and extreme weather events and global warming), an assessment of environmental constraints, and priorities for the future. The grain harvest and food security situation in 1996 is outlined. Discussions of the paper are presented by R. F. Chandler Jr., H. A. Guthrie, and R. Rabbinge.
