This publication intends to describe the stresses, constraints, and physiological changes that profoundly affect early adolescents for physicians, nurses, mental health professionals, social workers, educators, and concerned parents. Some of the topics addressed include: the effects of poverty, divorce and remarriage as major deterrents and/or facilitators of development; the processes involved in the normal or perturbed onset of puberty; emergent sexuality within the social context; health issues such as sexually transmitted diseases; school performance and linguistic competence; and, psychosocial maladjustment. The contributors offer specific approaches for dealing effectively with physiological and psychological transitions.
