Errors and complications in the catheterization of the superior vena cava and their prevention

The most commonly encountered errors and complications associated with the puncture and catheterization of the superior vena cava were identified and categorized, and ways to prevent them were determined. The histories of 1,563 patients who had undergone catheterization of their superior vena cava were studied. When catheterizing the superior vena cava it is necessary to adhere to all aseptic and antiseptic principles. It is expedient to use catheters with a stopping device as they will facilitate a reduction in the frequency of a series of complications. After the insertion of the catheter, contrast x-ray and constant monitoring of the patient should be performed.
