The experimental design of a multicentre randomized prospective trial which is described compares IMPACTReg., a new enteral formula with added arginine, RNA and fish oil designed to restore or improve immune function, with OsmoliteReg. HN in septic and critically ill patients. It is estimated that 360 patients will be required from the 12 participating study centres in the USA. The methods which will be used to monitor and assess the patients are discussed.
