At present, diagnosis of pancreatic cancer can be achieved only in symptomatic patients. Better diagnostic and staging procedures, which include angiography, laparoscopy, and peritoneal cytology, allow a more accurate preoperative assessment of resectability and may spare the patient an unnecessary operation or provide him or her with the option of transfer to a specialized unit for a definitive operation with lower morbidity and mortality rates.
