The paper discusses a study by the Commission on Health Research for Development, an international initiative to define and promote health research in developing countries, of financial resources devoted to this purpose. While the data are admitted to be uneven in detail and completeness, it is shown that only a small percentage of total health research funds is addressed to health problems in developing countries. A detailed analysis is made of the source of these funds, by state, NGO, and other sources. The paucity of data from the pharmaceutical industry is noted. [The paper is a useful, albeit general, study of funding patterns in health research.]Denise Kelley Lee.
