In response to a paper by Montaner et al. (Annals of Internal Medicine (1990) 113, 14-20) on the use of corticosteroids in the treatment of patients with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia and AIDS, G.R. Mason discusses the significance of their findings for clinicians: whether steroid therapy is appropriate for most patients who are even suspected of having this infection and if so, would it increase the risk for those patients who happen not to have P. carinii infection.
