Authors examined 338 adult human skulls for an occipital emissary foramen in the region of foramen magnum. A solitary foramen was found in 7 skulls (2.07%) in the occipital bone just posterior to the foramen magnum near the midline. It corresponds to the site of occipital venous sinus so it probably connects the sinus with suboccipital venous plexus. It is important for neuro-surgeons to recognize the presence of this vein during suboccipital craniotomy.
