A veterinarian was called to "increase the likelihood of fertility" of a mare which had foaled once five or six years previously. The veterinarian administered a Lugol douche, although there was no indication for the treatment, and the mare was on heat. This elicited severe and very persistent straining. The judgement in the subsequent malpractice suit was that the damages claimed were too high, as the complainant had not given the veterinarian the opportunity to reduce the injury.
