The structure of the broad ligament (mesovarium, mesosalpinx and mesometrium) of the uterus is described in relation to the countercurrent exchange of steroid hormones and prostaglandins between the arterial, venous and lymphatic vessels of the uterus. The role that countercurrent exchange of PGF2 alpha may have in protecting the corpus luteum against luteolysis during the luteal phase of the oestrous cycle and in early pregnancy is discussed.
