Feline immunodepressive retrovirus infections in France

In a serological survey 2290 serum samples from 629 healthy cats and 1661 cats with symptoms of feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) or feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection were subjected to commercial ELISAs for FeLV and FIV; 18.3% of healthy cats and 36.2% of cats with symptoms were infected by one of the 2 pathogenic viruses. The infection of the same cat by both viruses was rare in the healthy cats (0.6%) but more common in symptomatic cats (19.9%). Among the sick cats 28.8% (331 of 1391) were FIV-infected in the FeLV negative population and 36.2% (98 of 270) in the FeLV positive population. It is suggested that there is a pathogenic interaction between these two feline retroviruses in the field.
