Knowledge of students regarding child nutrition

Groups of 101 boys and 60 girls from 2 schools in Delhi, India, and of 45 qualified and student nurses were tested as to their knowledge of protein-energy malnutrition, anaemia, xerophthalmia and iodine deficiency. Of all the subjects tested, only 52% gave correct answers to questions relating to desirable duration of breast feeding and the relative importance of energy compared with protein. The nursing students, in addition, had inadequate knowledge regarding iodine deficiency and major nutrition problems in India. Of certificated nurses 72.7 and 63.6% gave correct answers to questions regarding sources of vitamin A and the appropriate age for introducing semi-solid food in infants.
