Difficulties in rural marriage in Korea Republic include imbalances in the sex ratio, the underdevelopment of agricultural areas compared with urban and non-agricultural areas, poor medical, cultural and education services in rural areas, the poor environment of rural areas, and the low socioeconomic status of the rural population. Added to this are the poor functioning of the mass media, the urban-oriented attitudes of unmarried women and their parents, the limited opportunities for young men and women to meet, and the unattractiveness of rural youth and traditional values, leading young unmarried women to avoid marriage. The solutions proposed include reducing the gap in lifestyle between urban and rural populations, changes in agricultural policies leading to improvements in rural areas, increased effectiveness and cooperation between offices and associations dealing with rural and agricultural development, increased adult education and the encouragement of changes in the attitudes of rural women.
