Educating the public about biotechnology

Distinguishing hazard (actual risk from biotechnology) from outrage (public perception of risk), 8 types of event causing outrage are listed. It is suggested that (1) the public must be involved in regulation of research, (2) the Australian Biotechnology Association must help make biotechnology familiar, (3) industry must openly investigate diseases putatively linked to biotechnology, (4) realistic information about risks and benefits must be produced, and (5) matters of fairness, equity, justice and community benefit must be addressed positively. Several measures concerned with improving awareness of biotechnology amongst the public are suggested.
