The New World screw worm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) was first reported in Libya in 1989 and is now a serious problem there attacking a wide range of animal species and humans in one area close to the Tunisian border and another near Al-Khums. The annual number of cases in farm animals exceeds 2000, but the anticipated spread into the Jebel Al-Akhdar (Green Mountains) of Cyrenaica, has not happened. A massive surveillance and control operation has been organized and a 'sterile-male' control programme is planned to begin in August 1990.
