The author replies to a reader's query about the possibility that mosquitoes might transmit the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). He briefly summarizes the published evidence and argument on the topic: epidemiological, entomological and virological (attempts at detection of the HIV genome in wild-caught arthropods, and at infection of mosquitoes or mosquito cell lines - all with negative results), and then he explains the extreme remoteness of the probability that mosquitoes might transmit HIV mechanically. He concludes by stating that there is no evidence to date to support any hypothesis of transmission of HIV by mosquitoes or other arthropods.
