Consumption expenditure pattern of employed and non-employed 'Gaddi' women households

An attempt was made to ascertain the consumption/expenditure pattern of both employed (n=100) and unemployed (n=100) 'Gaddi' households in Bharmour subdivision of Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh, India, and to estimate the economic contribution of women through market and nonmarket work. Substantial variation was found in mean monthly income per consumption unit of both employed and unemployed respondent households, with the employed households having higher income on account of women's contribution. Per unit expenditure on both food and non-food items was higher in the case of employed respondent households. Quality of food intake, saving, and material possessions were also higher and better in the case of employed respondent households.
