Results are presented of nutrition rehabilitation, in a rural district hospital in southwest Tanzania, for 1100 children with severe protein-energy malnutrition admitted between May 1980 and May 1983. Overall mortality was 9% and the average increase of reference weight for age was 6.9% and of reference weight for height 8.7%. Cost was low, mainly because of short average duration of stay in hospital, 19.2 days. Early discharge was linked to follow-up at community level.
