Thallium-201 in human milk: observations and radiological consequences

In this note, the concn. of 201Tl in human milk was measured over 11 days following injection of 111 MBq (3.0 mCi) of 201Tl for a myocardial perfusion study. Milk samples were collected twice each day. A 2-component exponential retention function was found, the components having effective half-times of 1.13 and 15.1 days resp. The second component half-time, which is greater than the physical half-life, indicated a concentrating mechanism for 201Tl in milk. It is recommended that breast-feeding be delayed 24-48 h following administration of 111 MBq 201Tl.
