A 3-year-old Beagle, seven weeks pregnant, was depressed and lethargic, and had a brown vulval discharge. There was a partially opened cervix. Culture of a vaginal swab revealed a pure growth of Listeria monocytogenes. The animal made a slow but uneventful recovery after caesarean section.
