Fibrocystic mastopathy as a cancer risk

Between 1963 and 1970, 136 cases of mastopathy were recorded from among 558 women who had undergone outpatient breast surgery. These cases were histomorphologically rated and were followed up for periods between 15 and 22 years. Carcinoma developed in nine of 121 patients, accounting for a 7.5-fold cancer risk. The cancer risk was separately calculated for each of the subtypes involved, and variations between groups were remarkably rare. Hence, an eight-fold carcinoma rate for mastopathy I seems to put into question the prognostic value of epithelial proliferation.
