Rural-urban fertility differences and the fertility transition

The rural-urban fertility differences in the Swedish and Japanese nations and provinces are discussed. The differences are systematically analyzed using Hutterite indices. The size of the difference is directly related to the stage a country has reached in its fertility transition. The relative importance of contributions by differences in nuptiality and marital fertility to the difference in total fertility varies with the stage a country has reached within the transition. The sizes of rural-differences are not insignificant at any time, but they are not so great as to render shifts in the proportion of urban population.
