This paper reviews and illustrates the contributions of agriculturally-related social science research to the welfare of rural people, with emphasis on sociological research done in the state experiment stations. Primary attention is given to research which contributes to decision making on public problems and within public programmes. Most broadly, research contributes " understanding ".
