Americas adolescents are generally in poorer health than their parents were at the same age. The role of nutrition and exercise in maintaining good health is reviewed. Nutrient requirements and eating habits during adolescence, including the effects of puberty are discussed. Activity patterns and fitness, body composition and physical capacity are considered. Nutritional problems during adolescence such as obesity, anaemia and appetite disorders are common and special groups at risk of malnutrition e.g. pregnant adolescents, physically/socially disabled adolescents and athletes, need special attention. Strategies to improve adolescent health through better nutrition and exercise are suggested.
