Antigens encoded by RT1.C did not induce graft-vs.-host reactions after bone marrow transplantation in rats, either in semiallogeneic combinations (parent -> F1) or in fully allogeneic combinations (parent -> parent). However, RT1.C antigens prevented engraftment in fully allogeneic combinations, apparently as a result of classic rejection rather than allogeneic lymphocyte cytotoxicity. There was spontaneous marrow engraftment in the F1 -> parent semiallogeneic combination. This may have resulted from a gene dosage effect, the RT1.C antigen concentration being too low in F1 animals to induce a host-vs.-graft reaction.
