Pulmonary complications in AIDS patients are discussed. Nearly 80% of patients with HIV virus acquire Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia and in half of these patients the AIDS was detected by this lung infection. Children with AIDS most frequently show interstitial lung disease due to P. carinii or to lymphoid interstitial pneumonia. A list of primary and secondary criteria aiding diagnosis of AIDS in children is presented (after Cantani, 1987, modified).
