In June 1974 there were 757 000 cows in Sweden in 78 000 herds; 67 000 of the cows were beef cows. Annual milk yield/cow averaged 4450 kg, representing a 2% increase over the previous year. 281 000 bulls, 252 000 cows and 139 000 calves were slaughtered, and the production of beef and veal totalled 144 million kg. There were 43 000 pig herds producing 280 million kg pig meat; 68% of all pigs slaughtered were produced in 1800 herds. An account is given of AI in cattle and pigs, milk recording, bull testing for beef, sow testing and ultrasonic testing of pigs. Data are presented in 32 tables and graphs. In June 1974 there were 757 000 cows in Sweden, of which 690 000 were dairy cows. Average milk yield was 4450 kg (vs. 5483 kg 4%-FCM for 363 000 milk-recorded cows). Total milk production rose 2% to 3070 million kg, of which 2961 million was delivered to dairies. Taking all costs into account, there was an average loss of 220kr/cow (vs. a loss of 330kr in 1973). Among numerous other animal production statistics, data are given on average yields of different breeds and on the udder health service.
