Between September, 1987, and April, 1989, four cases of hydrometra were seen among approximately 150 non-breeding rabbits which were used for serum production. The affected animals were sandy half lop rabbits aged from one to three years. Three rabbits were presented with enlarged fluid-filled abdomens and increased respiratory rates, the fourth with a palpable, displaced liver and fluid in the abdomen. One rabbit was unsuccessfully treated with diuretics. All the rabbits were killed. An enlarged fluid-filled uterus was present in each case. The plasma progesterone level measured in one case was found to be normal. During the same period no cases were observed in a similar number of breeding females at the same institute.
