The Irish court ruled that legal provisions granting a married woman smaller unemployment benefits than those granted to a married man violated Article 4 of European Economic Communities Directive No. 79/7. This Directive forbids discrimination on the grounds of sex or marital and family status with respect to social security matters and requires member states to take measures to abolish legal provisions that are discriminatory.
