Scientific basis of oral rehydration therapy (ORT) has revolutionized the concept and management of diarrhoea, Since the use of oral rehydration solution largely depends on the level of knowledge and attitude of mothers, the present study was undertaken to determine the same in women living in the slum areas adjoining the Lady Hardinge Medical College in New Delhi. Out of a total 457 mothers interviewed, 210 (46%) used oral rehydration solution (ORS) packets for diarrhoeal remedy in children aged <5 years. Only 38.7% of the mothers were able to tell the correct method of preparation and 41.6% had the knowledge about the exact quantity of ORS to be given to the child suffering from diarrhoea. Misconceptions were prevalent, preventing the use of ORS during diarrhoea. Many mothers (29.3%) believed that one needs a prescription from a doctor in order to buy ORS, or that ORS has a bad taste or no fluid are to be given during diarrhoea. Misconception rate was significantly higher among the less literate mothers. 69.8% of the mothers had knowledge regarding the role of ORS during diarrhoea but only 46.0% had ever used ORS. Among the ORS users, most had the correct knowledge regarding the role of ORS during diarrhoea (89.5%), and 67.6% knew how to prepare ORS. The study established that poor literacy status limits the ability of mothers to utilize ORS properly for preventing diarrhoeal induced dehydration.
