The results of a study of 3 groups of patients in Mexico, treated for parenchymal neurocysticercosis with albendazole, a benzimidazole with proven activity at high doses against human hydatidosis, are presented and compared with those obtained with praziquantel treatment. A single course of albendazole induced 76% remission of lesions, with a reduction in the number of cysts in 9 of 10 cases and total disappearance of all parenchymal cysts in 6 of them. A single course of praziquantel therapy induced 73% remission of lesions, with a reduction in the number of lesions in 9 of 10 cases and total disappearance of all parenchymal cysts in 7 of 10 cases. In contrast, in all 5 control cases, cystic lesions remained unchanged. Tolerance and adverse reactions were similar for both albendazole and praziquantel.
