The objective of this study was to reevaluate the legally induced abortion (LIA) in the perspective of the national family planning programme. The cases of LIA increased from 3,88,405 to 5,84,870 during 1980-88. A large proportion of the acceptors were in their twenties. About 35-50 per cant LIA cases were performed because of failure of contraceptive methods. Not more than 15 per cent LIA were performed in the second trimester of the pregnancy. Around 50-56 per cent acceptors did not opt for sterilization or IUD following LIA during these years. Acceptance of LIA by a large number of younger women have shown that the concept of a small family is gaining importance. Couples the contraceptive methods.
