The role of heredity in the development of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

A cohort of 74 hypertrophic cardiomyopathy patients of both sexes, 14-53 yrs of age, was studied in order to determine the role of heredity in the disease and to identify the mechanisms responsible for the pathological trait being passed on, as well as its associative links with HLA system antigens. The incidence of the disease in the patients' families was established by examining 198 of the cohort's close relatives, comprising 62 families. The results confirm the view that hypertrophic cardiomyopathy has a hereditary component and that it is passed on by an autosomal dominant trait with high penetration and variable expression. Genetic markers of the disease were found to be associated with the HLA system, these markers signifying a high degree of relative risk for developing the disease.
