The aetiologies of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are described and compared. Interaction between perpetrating, precipitating and predisposing factors of both conditions are explained. Although anorexia nervosa has been recognised for more than a century, bulimia nervosa has been known for only a decade. Cases of bulimia outnumber those of anorexia nervosa by a factor of 10. Advice is given on management of the 2 conditions. An accurate diagnosis combined with appropriate early treatment should reduce mortality.
