Uzazi Na Malezi Bora Tanzania (UMATI), the family planning association of Tanzania, has been the country's premier national family planning manpower training institution since 1970. This article reviews the activities of UMATI. Its role in facilitating service provision to the entire eligible population in the country is discussed. The various workshops and projects offered by UMATI to train personnel involved in family planning are presented along with data from a pilot project which provided evidence of the project's effectiveness. UMATI's youth training project is discussed, as well as efforts to train day care attendants, staff and volunteers. Ministries, municipalities, and other institutions with which UMATI collaborates are listed. The training methodology of UMATI is discussed and problems faced by UMATI, such as inadequate staffing and shortage of training materials are mentioned.
