Prevalence of ischemic heart disease in Leningrad: findings of cross-sectional and prospective studies

The results of a population study conducted in Leningrad in order to determine the prevalence of ischemic heart disease and its relationship with the main risk factors were presented. The 1-stage study of 40-59 yr-old men showed the high incidence of ischemic heart disease, which increases with age. Hypertension is the main risk factor. The prospective study showed that at the lowest cholesterol level mortality due to cardiovascular diseases does not decrease as could be expected, but on the contrary, it increases. The prospective study also showed a manifest inverse correlation between cholesterol of high-density lipoproteins and mortality due to cardiovascular diseases only in patients with arterial hypertension. The data obtained may indicate that it is necessary to review the therapeutic tactics with regard to reducing blood cholesterol level.
